Many California homeowners are concerned about old lead piping. While the common assumption is that lead piping must be replaced, this misconception can lead to expensive, time-consuming repairs — especially if the pipes are located behind finished ceilings and walls.Pipe lining technology is growing in popularity as a non-destructive and non-disruptive way to coat old pipes and prevent lead from leaching lead into the home’s water system. Pipe lining involves removing existing corrosion in the pipes and applying an epoxy barrier coating to in-wall, underground, or under-foundation pipes.
Since the pipe lining process is non-invasive, there is no damage to buildings, landscape, or hardscape, eliminating the cost of reconstruction. Pipe lining can be as much as 50 percent less expensive than the cost of a [traditional sewer pipe line replacement] process, such as repairing. How Does Pipe Lining Work?
We use a product by Nu Flow called Nu Line, a blown-in epoxy coating designed for potable water systems. This patented process can be used in a variety of applications, including coating lead pipes. The Nu Line Epoxy Barrier Coating can be used to repair HVAC, gas, fire-suppression, and other pressurized pipes with diameters ranging from 1/2″ to 12″.
To start the pipe lining process, the pipe system will be mapped out and pinhole leaks detected using compressed air. Next, the pipes will be thoroughly cleaned to remove any built-up corrosion and debris. An anchor tooth profile will be applied for the epoxy to adhere to. A two-part epoxy solution will then be mixed, poured into, and blown through the pipes with heated compressed air. This will allow the epoxy to adhere to the anchor tooth profile. Finally, the pipe is inspected with a camera to ensure the epoxy barrier coating has been applied properly. The epoxy dries to create a protective coating that will prevent metal leaching, pinhole leaks, corrosion, and other failures. Best of all, Nu Line can be installed without having to dig, tear, or open walls and ceilings.
Why Nu Line Epoxy Barrier Coatings?
Nu Line Epoxy Barrier Coatings have a life expectancy of more than 10 years, making them a much more economical choice than pipe replacement. For generations, your family will no longer need to worry about the quality of the tap water that they drink or use to prepare food.
Restoration of existing plumbing pipes with epoxy pipe lining technology is a non-invasive solution that won’t cause damage to interior or exterior building structures. Nu Line Epoxy Barrier Coatings are used not just as a long-term repair solution, but also as a preventative measure to preserve the structure of existing plumbing, mechanical, and structural piping systems.
